New to Toronto? On a Toronto work assignment and want to see the sights? Visiting Toronto and the GTA? The Greater Toronto Area has some spectacular things to see and do. In our “Visit” series, we will focus on some of the great day-trips to take to get to know your new hometown.

Haliburton Highlands is a tourist and cottage area in Central Ontario. The county borders Algonquin Provincial Park on the north, and includes townships such as Haliburton, Minden, Cardiff, Harcourt, and Wilberforce, among many others. With an abundance of lakes, this truly is a beautiful stop for travellers and cottagers. Some of the most popular lakes include Haliburton, Kashagawigamog, Kennisis, Minden, Paudash, and Redstone. The area also has produced five notable NHL individuals, including Ian “Scotty” Morrison. There is no shortage of things to do in the area, 12 months a year. Visitors of all ages can find fun things to do. Thrill seekers, outdoor enthusiasts, and those looking to relax can all find what they are looking for.

The spring and summer months bring warmer temperatures, longer days, and maple syrup! The highlands are full of local sugar bushes, where visitors can meet the owners and learn about the process of making this delectable treat. Feeling more on the creative side? Try your glassblowing skills at Artech Studios for a full day glassblowing workshop. Zip-lining is another popular activity at the Medeba Adventure Learning Centre. Water sports more your style? With so many lakes to chose from, the only decision left is which sport to partake in: canoeing, water skiing, wake boarding, tubing, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking… the list goes on.

Fall in Haliburton Highlands is truly breathtaking. Take a drive up to the lookout in Haliburton to snap some jaw-dropping pictures of the fall colours. Then head on down to town and enjoy a nice hot chocolate or glass of wine at one of their many local eateries. Hiking trails are everywhere. Get back in touch with nature, get some exercise and enjoy the beauty that is the Haliburton Forest. In September, there is even a large hiking festival called Hike Haliburton.

In winter months, this area becomes a winter wonderland with many fun activities for folks of all ages to enjoy. There are numerous snowmobile trails through the area (almost 400 km’s of groomed trails!), or you could try your hand at dogsledding in the Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve. Thrill seekers can try ice-climbing their way up a 15-metre ice wall. Feeling the need to get some exercise in the beautiful outdoors? There is “snowga” (yoga in the snow), snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and even downhill skiing at Sir Sam’s. Given the prevalence of lakes in the area, ice fishing options abound, as well as winter ATVing. Families can enjoy an enchanting sleigh ride through the forest and sugar bush in Tory Hill.

Haliburton Highlands if absolutely stunning in all seasons, and is full of things to see and do. The area does not disappoint!
